Maurice, known in the art community as Artfool, is a prolific artist and live painter who has been rooted in Joshua Tree for the past five years. Residing in 29 Palms, he lives and works at Broken Lantern, a unique space that has become a local hub for art and inspiration. Surrounded by the rugged beauty and mysticism of the high desert, Maurice creates vibrant, intricate works that evoke psychedelic and meditative experiences.
As the resident artist at Mon Petit Mojave, Maurice’s talent shines in the intimate setting of this beloved local venue, where his live painting performances captivate audiences alongside musical performances. Beyond Mon Petit Mojave, Maurice has painted live at some of the area's most celebrated events, including the Joshua Tree Music Festival. Each performance is a testament to his ability to channel the moment's energy into bold, dynamic artwork, while also involving and creating his community.
Pictured below, you'll see two different young artists, who showed passion and enthusiasm, and were asked by Maurice to make some contributions to his live painting at the May 2024 JTMF.
Maurice’s dedication to the local art scene extends further through his involvement in the Hwy 62 Open Studio Tours, where he has opened the doors of Broken Lantern to visitors for the past three years. This event showcases his commitment to fostering community and connecting with art lovers from near and far.
Whether creating large-scale works, sharing his process through live painting and private art lessons, or welcoming others into his creative space, Maurice continues to leave a lasting imprint on the Joshua Tree art community. His work is a vibrant reflection of the desert's unique beauty and boundless inspiration.
